"A Happy Day On A Dying Sea"

Gouache on paper
50 in x 44 in (128 cm x 112 cm)
2012

Painting we created for our exhibition "Breaking Circles, Broken Light" at Narwhal Gallery in Toronto. Sea otters!!!! How could anyone not love them?! We certainly do. So we created this painting celebrating the warm fuzzy feeling we get from sea otters, but also with a little reminder that they are almost gone from this world and clinging on to the last vestiges of their habitat that humans have not yet destroyed. :) Lovely and a little sad, but mostly lovely!!

A Poster of this painting is available now in OUR WEB SHOP!

The print is based on kozy's 2009 drawing "Spirit Animal Collective". The drawing was the culmination of kozy's 4 year-long "Unknown Portraits" project, which involved Kozy's nearly obsessive search through old photographs in junk shops from Australia to Spain to Northern England to San Francisco to our own backyard in Venice Beach (and more!).  Most of the drawings were the size of playing cards, but for the final artwork Kozy create a massive graphite rendering of a 1940's-era New Zealand primary school class photo.  In it she imagined the camera to reveal the spirit animal within each of the students.  This summer we decided to produce a colorized version reminiscent of old tinted photos (Dan's grandmother used to tint photos as a side job while raising her children) and this is the result.

Proper Business People now!

We haven't had new business cards done up in years since we don't get out much, but recently I thought we should take ourselves more seriously so I had some made up.  I have to say these new Luxe business cards by MOO knocked our socks off.  They are just amazing in qaulity - the feel of the paper, the weight, the printing quality, even the packaging it comes in - just super nice!  It almost makes me want to go out and netowork! So cool.

Campbell's Shark Fin Soup

2012
soup can, resin, sculpey, acrylic, wood

Our piece for the "I Like Soup" exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art which opened May 2012

We sought to create a really grisly, didactic piece that is not in any way clever, but just pointing out our disgust with the practice of shark finning and the Chinese continued appetite for destruction that is pushing these amazing animals to the brink of extinction.

Sharks sculpted by Kozy, painted by Kozy and Leah. Label by Leah and Dan. Resin by Kozy and Dan with major assist from Charlie Becker.

Aloha!!! from Maui

Back from an amazing week in Maui, Hawaii.  Its the kind of place we are resistant to liking.  Its just too easy.  Its where everyone wants to go for vacation, and thus filled with stuff we hate in a vacation location: resorts, over priced crappy food, a constant barrage of tour operators, and loads of muggles.  Thankfully we had an amazing opportunity to stay on the eastern half of the island, away from the tourist hordes,  and another Maui revealed itself to us and we fell in love with it. Damn!
